Donald Glover Leads 'PUBG' Live-Action Series at Netflix
Netflix is developing a live-action series based on the popular game 'PUBG', with Donald Glover set to star, write, and direct. This marks a significant step in Netflix's strategy to adapt video games into series.
Netflix is set to develop a live-action series adaptation of the popular battle royale game 'PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds' (PUBG), with Donald Glover taking the helm as star, writer, director, and executive producer, according to Deadline Hollywood reporting. This project underscores Netflix's ongoing strategy to expand its slate of video game adaptations, following similar projects like 'Assassin’s Creed' and 'Gears of War'.
The involvement of Donald Glover, known for his acclaimed work on 'Atlanta' and 'Mr. & Mrs. Smith', adds significant star power and creative direction to the project. Glover's collaboration with his brother Stephen Glover, who will also write and executive produce, continues their successful partnership from previous projects.
PUBG, developed by South Korean company Krafton, has been a global phenomenon since its 2017 release, breaking multiple Guinness World Records. The game's premise involves players being dropped onto an island to battle until only one remains, a concept that could translate well into a dramatic series format.
While specific plot details for the series remain under wraps, the adaptation is part of Netflix's broader effort to capitalise on the popularity of video games by bringing them to the screen. This approach not only taps into existing fan bases but also attracts new audiences to the streaming platform.
The series is being produced by Neon TV's Michael Schaefer, Fam Udeorji for Gilga, and Krafton's LV3H, indicating a strong production team behind the project. As Netflix continues to invest in video game adaptations, the success of the 'PUBG' series could pave the way for more such projects in the future.
